Biography

Riyad Karim Mahrez was born on 21st February 1991 to the family of Halima Mahrez and Ahmed Mahrez in Sarcelles, France. Mahrez is a professional footballer. He plays the role of a winger for Premier League club Manchester City and captains the Algeria national team.

Mahrez started his career as a youth player for French club AAS Sarcelles. He becamed professional in 2009 with Quimper, where he played for only one season before moving to Le Havre, spending a total of three years with them, initially playing for their reserve team and then becoming a first-team regular.
In January 2014, Mahrez signed for English side Leicester City, helping them win the Championship and promotion to the Premier League at the end of his first season. In the 2015–2016 season he was the Algerian Footballer of the Year, the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, and was a member of the Premier League PFA Team of the Year as he helped Leicester City win the Premier League. He signed for Manchester City in 2018, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup in his first season.

Mahrez made his international appearance for Algeria in 2014 and represented them at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021, winning the 2019 tournament. In 2016 he was named CAF’s African Footballer of the Year.

Riyad Karim Mahrez was born on 21st February 1991 to the family of Halima Mahrez and Ahmed Mahrez in Sarcelles, France.

In 2004, he started playing for AAS Sarcelles, and his father would accompany him in training and to almost every game. But Ahmed, his father, died in 2006, and Mahrez was only 15 at the time. Career

Mahrez moved to Quimper, a 7th-ranked club in France. As a teenager Mahrez was very skinny and his coaches believed he would not be successful as a professional because he was not as strong or as fast as his peers, but his outstanding performance was excellent and he was focused on developing it further.

His hard work at Quimper finally paid off and he received several offers from big clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille. But he was looking to develop his game further, so he rejected their offers and chose to sign at Le Havre in the French second division. Mahrez had to make his way to the first team of the Reserve. He scored a total number of six (6) goals and appeared in 60 games before Leicester City called him. Mahrez was not happy with the gameplay of Ligue 2, where most teams were happy to just sit back and defend. He criticized Ligue 2, saying most teams were happy to end games in a scoreless draw.

While Leicester was part of the English Football League at the time, and when his brother Walid, who is also his manager, told him about Leicester City, he thought it was a rugby club. His family were skeptical of his move to England and expected him to move to Spain where the gameplay was more technical than physical. But Mahrez rose to the challenge and moved to England to play in the second-tier English league. He was impressed with their training facilities and quickly settled in.

He made his appearance for Leicester in the 79th minute, against Middlesbrough in a 2-0 game. He scored his first tied goal in a draw against Nottingham Forest, and after a few games as a substitute he started playing as a starter. Leicester won the league title and was promoted to the Premier League after a 10-year absence.

He scored his first Premier League goal in October 2014 in a 2-2 draw against Burnley and has been instrumental in Leicester’s 7-game winning streak in the last 9 games to ensure they remain in the Premier League, having scored 4 goals and 3. assists. He signed a renewed contract, keeping him at the club for another 4 years, and scored 2 goals in a 4-2 win over Sunderland in their first league game of the season. By the end of the season, he had scored 17 league goals and 8 assists, his efforts contributing to Leicester’s first-ever Premier League trophy and was named Premier League Team of the Year.

Due to his outstanding performance, Leicester renewed his contract again and he played a big role in helping Leicester reach the Champions League quarter-finals. He already had interests from bigger clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City, and Mahrez believed he was up for a new challenge, so he expressed his wish for a public transfer. But the transfer did not take place and he ended up spending 1 more season at the club.

In July 2018, Mahrez signed for Manchester City in a £ 60million transfer, becoming Manchester City’s most expensive player and the biggest transfer fee Leicester received for a single player. He scored his first goals a brace in Manchester City’s 6-0 at Cardiff. By the end of his first season with Manchester City, he had won his 2nd Premier League title, as well as the FA Cup and the Carabao Trophy, he was even named the best player in the Carabao tournament.

At the end of the 2018-2019 season, Mahrez was named to the 23-man squad to play the Africa Cup of Nations and appointed a team captain. He scored a superb free kick in the 5th minute of added time to end a timid game against Nigeria and take them to the final. Algeria won the tournament by beating Cameroon 1-0 and becoming African champions. This brought Mahrez’s medals to 4 in a single season.

In August 2019, Mahrez missed the 2019 FA Community Shield over concerns about medicine he had been given by the Algerian national team. The Algerian FA described it as a “non-event”. Mahrez later started in Manchester City’s 5–0 opening day away win against West Ham United, being involved in all 5 of his side’s goals, providing two assists for hat-trick scorer Raheem Sterling and winning a penalty for Sergio Agüero to eventually score after a retake.

On 28 November 2020, Mahrez scored his first hat-trick for City in a 5–0 home league win over Burnley. On 4 May 2021, Mahrez scored both goals in a 2–0 home win over Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals, and by scoring via a direct free kick in a 2–1 away win a week earlier, he led City through to the first European Cup final in the club’s history.

On 15 July 2022, Manchester City announced Mahrez had signed a two-year contract extension which will last until 2025.
