EPL Mikel Obi reveals how Mourinho converted him to defensive midfielder. John Obi Mikel, a Chelsea icon, has described how Jose Mourinho persuaded him to play defensive midfield.
Mourinho coached Mikel while the two were teammates at Chelsea.
The former Super Eagles captain often wore the number 10 for Lyn Oslo and Nigeria’s national team.
Mourinho, who currently oversees AS Roma, changed Obi Mikel’s position at Chelsea from forward to defensive midfielder.
“That was Jose, I know you played as a number 10 in the national team, in Lyn Oslo,” Mikel stated in a statement to Dubai Eye 103.8.
“You have excellent ball control, you don’t turnover the ball, and you are physically powerful, but I don’t see you playing up the pitch. I believe you are qualified to succeed Claude Makelele.
“He told me to stay here and take over Cluad Makelele’s post since he was also departing at the time—it was his final season—and he was leaving too. I want you to fill in for him since he’s leaving.
