Women’s AFCON 2024: NFF delays decision on Waldrum, Madugu

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is on the brink of making a decisive call regarding Randy Waldrum’s position as the manager of the Super Falcons.

Following the Super Falcons’ qualification for the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, uncertainty surrounds Waldrum’s role. The team, under interim coach Justin Madugu, secured their spot by defeating Cape Verde 2-1 in the playoff’s second leg.

The finalized list of twelve teams for the WAFCON includes Nigeria, Algeria, Botswana, Ghana, and others, confirmed after the last round of qualifiers on December 5.

Waldrum, who helmed the Super Falcons since 2020, criticized the NFF for inadequate preparation for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and unresolved wage issues. His initial three-year contract expired on October 31, leading to a deadlock over an extension.

Amidst this uncertainty, Madugu assumed temporary charge, guiding the team during the CAF Women’s Olympic Qualifiers against Ethiopia in October.

Despite Waldrum’s past success in securing WAFCON qualification and a spot at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, conflicts with the NFF surfaced before the latter event due to salary disputes and disagreements over tournament plans.

NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, hinted at an impending resolution regarding Waldrum’s status, affirming that once the technical committee and board make a decision, it will be publicly disclosed.

Audu Ojo, head coach of Dawaki Rangers, advocated for Madugu’s capability to lead the Super Falcons, given his experience and past collaboration with Waldrum. He urged swift resolution of the contract issue with Waldrum for clarity on the team’s coaching structure ahead of the WAFCON.

The imminent decision by the NFF on Waldrum’s fate is poised to determine the managerial landscape of the Super Falcons for the upcoming tournament in Morocco.
