The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has attributed the defection of 27 members of the state Assembly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the alleged absence of effective governance in the state.
Tony Okocha, the Chairman of APC, Rivers State Caretaker Committee, addressed journalists in Port Harcourt, citing discussions with some lawmakers who reportedly confided in him about their reasons for defection.
The lawmakers, belonging to the faction of the embattled House Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, switched allegiance from the PDP to the APC, aligning with the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Describing the defection as a significant gain for the APC, Okocha, also representing Rivers State at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Management Board, highlighted the official communication received by the party regarding the lawmakers’ move.
He emphasized the importance of sharing this development with the public, praising the defected Assembly members and underlining that the strength of 27 lawmakers outweighs the influence of four legislators.
Okocha criticized Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s alleged partiality towards the smaller group of Assembly members, stating the current administration’s failure to align with its initial goals of continuity and consolidation. He expressed concerns about the reported lack of progress and rising hardship in the state.
Asserting that the lawmakers’ defection would foster checks and balances in governance, Okocha commended their decision, welcoming them into the APC fold.
He emphasized the significance of this political shift despite suggestions that it came belatedly, indicating its potential to enhance accountability within the government.
