World Cup Shaqiri joins Ronaldo, Messi, sets unique record. After scoring in his nation’s World Cup match against Serbia on Friday, Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri joined Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo in an exclusive club.

Shaqiri scored the first goal as Switzerland defeated Serbia 3-2 in Group G.

With his goal against Serbia, the 31-year-old became one of just three players to score in each of the previous three FIFA World Cup competitions.

Ronaldo and Messi are the other two athletes that have done so.

With Shaqiri’s goal against Serbia, Switzerland was able to advance to the round of 16.

The former Liverpool player has also scored for Switzerland at five important competitions, including the last two European Championships.

Switzerland will play Portugal on Tuesday in the Round of 16 after placing second in Group G.
