UEFA has announced that the Euro 2024 qualifier between Belgium and Sweden, which was abandoned at half-time due to a shooting incident in Brussels, will not be replayed. The game was halted with the score tied at 1-1 for security reasons.
As per UEFA’s decision, the half-time score of 1-1 will be considered final, and each team will be awarded one point for the match. This outcome will not affect the qualification status of Group F, as Belgium has already secured qualification to the UEFA EURO 2024 final tournament, while Sweden has been mathematically eliminated.
The decision was made after it was determined that it was impossible to continue the match the following day, and both the Royal Belgian Football Association and the Swedish Football Association expressed their desire not to complete the remaining match time. The statement also noted that the preliminary group stage of the competition must be concluded in the upcoming November international window, making it impractical to reschedule the match.
The match was marred by a terror attack in Brussels that led to the deaths of two Swedish fans and left another seriously injured. The attacker was shot by Brussels police in the Schaerbeek neighborhood.
