At the Community Stadium, Liverpool struggled mightily in the opening period as an own goal from Ibrahima Konate and an outstanding Yoane Wissa header gave the hosts a two-goal advantage at the break.
After VAR further overturned two Brentford scores for offside, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netted the lone goal for the Reds just after halftime.
After being pushed aside by Bryan Mbeumo, Konate calmly slid the ball past Alisson to give Brentford the victory.
In his post-game interview, he remarked, “They are incredibly physical, and in the end nobody knows where the ball is exactly, and then it’s an own goal and that’s clearly very unlucky.
By Brentford’s second goal, Klopp said, “I’m really sad” and remarked, “That’s the goal I detest the most.”
The German continued, “And the third goal should not be a goal,” pointing out that “if you have ever played football and you are doing a full sprint and you get a slight push you go down because you cannot keep balanced, that’s how it is and you can see it with Ibou [Konate], but Stuart Atwell wanted to see it differently.”
Talking to the referee about some of his calls during the game, according to Klopp, would be “like talking to my microwave,” and he insisted that nothing would come of it.
The German manager bemoaned the referee’s decision to permit everything to occur throughout the game.
“They tell us before the season that the players have to be careful at this point because the officials would be watching it, but then you see these games and you realize that pretty much everything is permitted,” he said.
