Graham Potter wants to bolster the midfield, although Chelsea, who are spending significantly under their new ownership, had a £55 million deal for Mois és Caicedo of Brighton rejected last week.
Fernández, who was crucial to Argentina’s World Cup victory last month, is still a possibility for Chelsea.

According to sources, negotiations are expected to pick back up this week as they attempt to make one more push for the 22-year-old midfielder.
Fernández has consistently stated his desire to join Chelsea, but Benfica, who are in the round of 16, wants to hold onto him until the end of the current campaign.
Other midfielders, such as Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister, are targets for Chelsea. Since being acquired by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, they have spent around £460 million on 15 players.
