World Cup I’m disappointed, you’ve refused to learn – Terry slams Southgate for snubbing best player. The former captain of Chelsea, John Terry, has questioned Gareth Southgate’s choice to leave Phil Foden on the sidelines during England’s goalless draw with the USA at the 2018 World Cup.

The former England captain was perplexed by Southgate’s “negativity” throughout the tedious tie against the United States.

After defeating Iran 6-2 in their first game on Monday, England struggled against the USA on Friday.

The majority of Southgate’s post-game criticism has focused on his hesitation to start Phil Foden, who has been hailed as England’s finest player in Qatar.

Former Chelsea captain Terry claimed Southgate has disregarded the lessons learned from other competitions.

“Disappointed with some of the tactical alterations. They were highly detrimental from our point of view,” he told beIN Sport.

“We’ve talked about Gareth, and he’s got the ability to grow from his past errors. Personally, I would have handled the situation differently; I don’t understand why Foden hasn’t appeared on the field.

“I’d love to see him on the pitch. He’s one of our top talents.”
