Laycon, the winner of Big Brother Naija Season 5, expressed his concern over the attitude of some opposition party supporters who seem to be actively wishing for Nigeria not to progress because their preferred candidates didn’t win in the recent presidential election held on February 25.
In a message on his social media platform, the singer questioned the logic behind citizens hoping for their country’s stagnation due to political differences. He posted, “I wonder why there are people (Nigerians, living in Nigeria) who actively hope and pray for things not to improve in this country just because their preferred candidate is not the current President. To what end?”
Laycon faced backlash in response to his post, with some individuals attributing the nation’s economic hardships to the prayers and wishes of opposition party supporters.
In response to the criticism, Laycon clarified his stance, emphasizing that Nigerian leaders are a reflection of the people. He said, “I’ve consistently maintained that our leaders are a reflection of who we are as individuals. As long as we, as individuals, don’t change, we will continue to experience what we emit. Misunderstanding disagreement as hostility and ill intentions is incorrect.”
He added, “I shared a tweet regarding a conversation I had earlier today, and the responses to it demonstrate that some people don’t read to understand before responding. Please take a moment to think before speaking or typing.”
Laycon continued, “I believe that our leaders are a reflection of us as a society. While we do have ineffective leaders, they were not always that way. Ordinary people who make life difficult for their peers only need to gain power to become leaders.”
He concluded, “The fuel attendants during fuel shortages, the POS attendants during currency crises, if they ascend to leadership roles, what will they do? Those benefiting from foreign currency earnings, do you believe they wish for the exchange rate to rise or fall? Sometimes, your ability to criticize should be turned inward.”
