AFN to hold 1st National 10km Cross-Country Championships. On January 28, 2023, in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba state, the inaugural Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, National 10km Cross Country Championship would take place.
The event is being held as part of the Tonobok Okowa-led AFN executive board’s plan to expand athletics throughout Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
The cross-country championship is also being planned, according to Tafida Gadzama, head of the federation’s road race subcommittee, to aid in the development of Nigeria’s middle and long distance runners.
You are aware that cross country running is a sport in which individuals and teams compete on open-air courses made of natural surfaces like grass or dirt.
According to Gadzama, who is also the first vice president of the AFN, “this way, our athlete will be growing immense strength as the hills and mud produce power and resilience in their calves, hamstrings, and quadriceps.”
The majority of elite long-distance athletes train for their season by competing in cross-country events. Kenya has already hosted a number of events since December, while Australia will host the World Cross Country Championships the following month. Gadzama said that he thinks the AFN’s objectives for the training of distance runners are moving in the correct path.
According to the AFN, athlete registration will take place in the Jalingo Township Stadium.
“Top ten (10) finishers in the senior male and senior female categories will receive prize money,” Read the invitation letter that the AFN sends to the secretaries, coaches, managers, military/paramilitary, and clubs of all sports groups.
