CBN silence on Supreme Court judgement worrisome – Abia NUJ. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has declined to make a definitive comment over whether or not old naira notes should be used, to the dismay of the Abia State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
The NUJ clarified its position in a statement that it released following its monthly congress, which was held at the NUJ press center in Umuahia.
The communique, which was signed by the Chairman of the NUJ in Abia, Comrade Victor Ndukwe, the Secretary of the Council, Comrade Adaeze Ralph Igbokwe, and other members of the communique drafting committee, noted that Abia residents’ lives were being negatively impacted by the CBN’s decision not to take a position following the Supreme Court ruling.
It continued by stating that the unpleasant scenario was making bank clients’ lives much harder and was also having an impact on Abian society as a whole.
The council encouraged the CBN to give a formal and definitive declaration about the coexistence of the old N1000 and N500 denominations with the recently issued denominations of N1000 and N500 as soon as possible in order to spare the Abian people more pain.
The statement continued:
“In order to promote the welfare of government workers and retirees, Congress urges the Abia State Government to rigorously abide by the conditions of the recent agreement it struck with organized Labor.
The Congress further requests that the federal and state governments take practical action to solve the ongoing shortage and price increase of petroleum products, which have caused additional economic hardship for Nigerians and are to blame for the nation’s raging inflation.
