As he walked out of Velana Airport, he was booed and humiliated, and a protest was held in the capital Malé to urge the Maldivian authorities not to allow him to travel safely.
Rajapaksa reportedly spent the night at the opulent Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi hotel, according to Maldivian media, which contrasted this wealth with the tremendous problems many common Sri Lankans are currently experiencing.
He has been “given admission on a private visit,” according to Singaporean authorities, but not to request refuge. The former president may attempt to fly to the United Arab Emirates, according to Sri Lankan security sources.
