“The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Garki Branch in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, strongly condemns the illicit practice of harvesting and trading kidneys in the region and surrounding areas.
Following reports earlier this week concerning the illegal organ harvesting in the FCT and Nasarawa State, Obioma Ezenwobodo, the branch chairman, affirmed the association’s stance. He disclosed that the branch’s Health and Medical Committee had been tasked with monitoring ongoing legal actions initiated by affected parties to ensure justice prevailed.
Ezenwobodo emphasized that the association had offered pro bono legal representation to victims. Additionally, he urged relevant government agencies and professional bodies to collaborate diligently to eradicate this disturbing trend.
The NBA advocates for the establishment of stringent regulatory measures to sanitize organ transplant practices, aligning with the National Health Act’s Section 54, which prohibits the sale or trade of human organs.
Describing the illegal harvesting and trading of kidneys as reprehensible, inhumane, and violative of the National Health Act’s stipulations, the NBA Garki Branch seeks to address this issue with urgency and severity.”
